Mental Health Festival Reading Rooms

Verbal’s Reading Rooms project is delighted to be holding two events this week as part of our involvement in the NI Mental Health Arts and Film Festival from May 9th-15th.

Both events will take place on Wednesday, May 11th, beginning with a Reading Rooms Volunteer meeting from 11am – 12.30pm at the Verbal Arts Centre. Guest speaker, Michael Harkin from Action Mental Health (AMH), will lead a session on Mental Health Awareness with our volunteer readers.

On Wednesday afternoon our Reading Rooms Mobile will visit AMH New Horizons Group, Springtown in Derry from 1pm-2.30pm for a Reading Rooms Taster Session.

Sinead Devine, Reading Rooms project manager, said: "The theme of opening up a conversation on mental health fits so well with Reading Rooms. Conversations on mental health issues can only help reduce the stigma that still seems to be attached to having mental health difficulties and we are delighted to be involved.

“All materials for the Reading Rooms this week will have a theme of mental health. This will stretch across the whole of Northern Ireland including our Young People Children in Need Project, those with long term conditions such as Stroke Survivors/Disability and Older People.”

The Northern Ireland Mental Health Film and Arts Festival 2016 was recently launched at Parliament Buildings, Stormont, Belfast.

The theme for the Mental Health Arts and Film Festival 2016 is ‘Tackling Stigma One Conversation at a Time’.
