A Verbal Arts Centre initiative, in partnership with Foyleside shopping centre and Easons book store, Little Legends has grown from strength to strength since its launch in March this year.

Eight local schools have come on board so far in the past five weeks, recruiting over 350 more Little Legends to join our unique Reading Rooms’ programme for younger children.

Mary Duddy Fitzpatrick, Project Officer Youth Reading Rooms, explained: “What makes the Little Legends’ project special is that our trained facilitator/Project officer reads the story and then takes the children on a journey inside the book, exploring the characters and the setting.

“The kids dramatise the story, which helps each child in the development and understanding of the narrative. They become the characters and deliver the dialogue which gives them a platform and voice to perform, whilst simultaneously building their confidence and self-esteem.”

The project, which is funded until February 2016, is free to schools and anyone can avail of the club.

Mary also delivers a Little Legends Reading Room every Saturday in Easons from 11am - 12 noon, with on average 40 children participating in the weekly sessions.

Fergal Rafferty, Centre Manager, Foyleside Shopping Centre, said: “Foyleside is delighted to be working in partnership with the Verbal Arts Centre, providing professional, free storytelling opportunities in our local schools and, also each Saturday at 11am in Easons as part of our Little Legends project.

“We are delighted with the response to date, as are the children. Membership for the Little Legends is available online or in the Centre to all of our shoppers and any child can also participate each Saturday morning. The initiative is free to all children and we can keep you informed of all of our events and rewards with your Little Legends loyalty card.”

Local schools who have joined the Verbal Arts Centre’s Little Legends programme include:- Belmont Nursery; The Academy Nursery; Sacred Heart PS; Trench Road Nursery; St Oliver Plunkett's PS; Strathfoyle Nursery; Carnhill Nursery; Mullabuoy PS; Chapel Road PS; Greenhaw PS.
