The People’s Republic of Creativity will take place during Voluntary Arts Week on May 23rd and 24th, turning the Verbal Arts Centre and surrounding outdoor space into a republic of creativity.

International artists from Made in Cardboardia along with Voluntary Arts Ireland, the Verbal Arts Centre, Urban Vizualz, In Your Space and the North West Carnival Initiative, will lead the event which even includes the building of an embassy – out of cardboard.

Kevin Murphy, Chief Officer of Voluntary Arts Ireland said: “We’re thrilled to be welcoming world renowned artists from the Made In Cardboardia team to Derry-Londonderry for what promises to be a spectacular event that all the family can enjoy.

“From the building of a cardboard embassy, to performances from local groups and even a Café on the Walls Bake-Off with the public crowning their Bake-Off King or Queen, this is a true celebration of creativity. And, with the Verbal hosting, we have one of the best spots in the city for it.

“This is a chance for the people of Derry-Londonderry to support the arts and show their own creative flair for the whole world to see and, we have no doubt it will be even more fantastic than we imagine."

The organisers are looking for people to join the Cardboardia street performance lab for a week full of creativity and collaboration and to help with the construction, preparation and presentation of the event.

The Verbal Arts Centre will also be hosting a special cardboard themed drop-in Reading Room on Saturday, May 23rd from 1-2pm. The weekly Little Legends’ Reading Room at Foyleside from 11am-12 noon, will be followed by a drop-in Mask Making Workshop with the children and accompanying adults bringing their creations back to the Verbal Arts Centre as part of the Cardboardia festival.

Andrea Doran, Director of Programming and Learning at the Verbal Arts Centre, said: “The weekend will be packed with activities which will see the Little Legends’ Reading Rooms in Foyleside come alive with creativity.  Children will also have the opportunity to go on a journey through the Verbal Arts Centre and create BIG.

“We are extending a huge Verbal Arts Centre welcome for everyone to join us for what promises to be a truly unique weekend of creativity for the city.”

Activities programmed during the two-day event include an opening speech by Tyran of Cardboardia, Civic Conversation, Street Art Workshop, Cardboardia Workshop for families making costumes and masks, film screenings, opening of the Cardboardia Embassy, Café on the Walls Bake-Off, In Your Space Youth Circus performance, Second Line NI – the city’s New Orleans style marching band - and Cardboardia diploma awards ceremony for workshop participants and partners.
