Reading Rooms Training Programme for Volunteers

The project has been delivered out in schools, with children and young people in care or at risk, with learning disabled, with older people, including those with dementia and in prisons since 2013 and has shown outcomes beyond all expectation and continues to develop and grow.

Reading Rooms is a volunteer led programme. The process begins by contacting the Verbal Arts Centre where you will meet with a member of staff who will chat to you about the project and find out more about you and your interests. All volunteers are Access NI checked and then offered training.

The Verbal Arts Centre is delighted to announce new accredited training for the project: OCN NI Level 2 Facilitation Skills for Shared Reading. This course aims to give volunteers the skills and confidence to deliver shared reading to a wide variety of groups. It is run over three days.

On the first day volunteers will learn about the key skills of a good facilitator. The second day will concentrate on Shared Reading skills. The final day offers an opportunity to try out these new skills and receive feedback.

The next training will run on Thursday 20th/Friday 21st and Monday 24th November 10 – 4pm daily at The Verbal Arts Centre in Bishop Street. Participants must attend all three days to gain the qualification and the training is offered free of charge.

This training will give volunteers the confidence to begin (initially with support) to conduct Reading Rooms with a group most suited to their interests and needs. The commitment is just one hour per week to a Reading Room group and of course volunteers can offer more if they can. So if you like reading and would like to share this with others do contact the Verbal Arts Centre either by phone or email.
